Skydive Chicago and staff would like to welcome our friends, the Cicada’s. They will be emerging this week to serenade us with their songs. After burrowing underground for the past 16 years they are ready to spread their wings and fly.
They may not be warm and fuzzy, but they are harmless. Although, if you are out mowing the lawn or weed whacking you may find yourself making a few extra female Cicada friends, because the noise is similar to the male mating call.
During the few weeks the Cicada’s will be with us they will be living it up Cicada style: stretching their wings, eating some trees, and laying some eggs before they die off. Once the eggs hatch the new babies will fall to the ground and burrow underneath for another 16 years.
As far as skydiving goes, it has been a beautiful week! The Super Otter flew non-stop this weekend. Our second Super Otter was at Skydive Iowa this past weekend for the NSL meet, and between the two 82 loads were flown!
A big thanks to Pilot Dave for taking the second Super Otter on the road lately! And thanks to Herman and Scott Aires for the 182 mission!
You will be happy to know that for the rest of the season both Super Otters will be at Skydive Chicago to keep calls to a minimum. It is going to be a great season and we will be needing both birds to keep you all in the air!
Some of you may have noticed the construction along the edge of the landing area by the runway. We are re-swelling the ditch for water runoff in order to maintain a dryer landing area.
This past Saturday there were lots of people in the Sky-lounge for game night. We played some drinking games, twister, darts, pool, and other fun games!
This weekend is our annual Make-A-Wish Memorial Weekend boogie hosted by Team Funnel. There will be a bake sale and a drawing with cash prizes. The proceeds will go to the Make-A-Wish foundation.
This coming Friday will kickoff the opening of the Tiki Hut! Team Funnel will be hosting Saturday’s festivities to support the Make-A-Wish fundraiser.
Then, on Sunday, Genie’s Cafe will be hosting a Burger Event. They'll be cooking up some Cajun Pork Burgers, Bison Burgers, the Good Ole Hamburger, & Portobello Burgers.
We are also gearing up for this years Summerfest, which is only two months away! We have confirmed many vendors including: Performance Designs, Tony Suits, Mirage, Freefall Accessories, Morpheus Technologies, and Phoenix-Fly. We will keep you posted on the latest vendors to confirm. Skydive Radio will also be here, broadcasting live, for Summerfest.
I’m sure some of you are curious about the aircraft that will be here for Summerfest…. It’s going to be awesome! In addition to our 2 Super Otters there will be the ever-popular Casa, a biplane for inverted jumps, a hot air balloon, and a King Air. The King Air will also be flying HALO jumps.
