How to Prepare Your Hair for Skydiving: A Guide for First-Timers

So, you’re gearing up for your first skydive or learning to solo skydive—how exciting! While you’re probably thinking about the thrill of the jump and the views, there’s one thing you might not have considered yet: how to prepare your hair and/or beard. Trust us, a little hair prep can go a long way toward making your experience more comfortable and enjoyable.

Skydiving involves a lot of wind (we’re talking speeds of over 120 miles per hour), so you’ll want to keep your hair in check. Whether it’s long, short, or somewhere in between, here are some tips to keep your hair secure and looking good for your jump—so you can focus on the fun!

1. Tie It Back for Security

When you leave the plane, you’ll be hit with some seriously strong wind, and your hair can easily get blown around or tangled. That’s why it’s a good idea to tie it back in a secure style.

If you have long hair, try these styles:

  • Braids: Simple, secure, and stylish. French braids or regular braids are perfect for keeping your hair tight and tangle-free. You could even try double braids if you want extra security.
  • Buns: Low or high buns work well for keeping hair contained. Just make sure it’s tight enough to stay put during your jump.
  • Ponytail: A tight ponytail is another option, but make sure it’s well-secured with a sturdy hair tie that won’t slip.

For shorter hair, you might not need to worry about tying it up as much. A headband or small clip can keep any stray pieces out of your face.

2. Avoid Heavy Hair Products

You might be tempted to load up on styling products to keep everything in place, but when you’re skydiving, it’s best to keep things light. Thick gels, oils, or mousses can weigh your hair down, making it harder to brush out tangles after the skydive.

Stick to lightweight products (or skip them entirely). If you’re worried about frizz or flyaways, a little bit of light hairspray or barrettes can do the trick. Remember, the wind at freefall speeds will undo most of your styling anyway, so keeping it simple is key.

3. Wash and Dry Your Hair Before You Jump

It’s a good idea to wash your hair before your skydive, but make sure it’s completely dry (especially if it’s cold outside). Damp hair can become harder to manage and might get even more tangled in the wind. Plus, it’ll dry naturally in the wind once you’re in the air, but you want to start with a fresh base!

4. Check the Weather

The weather can impact your hairstyle, so it’s always a good idea to check the forecast before you jump. If it’s going to be windy, consider a more secure style like a braid or bun. If it’s humid, keep in mind that your hair might frizz up after the jump. For colder weather, dry air can leave your hair a little stiff, so be prepared to hydrate it after your jump with some leave-in conditioner or smoothing products. It’s always good to plan ahead based on the conditions, so you’re ready for whatever the elements throw your way.

5. Post-Jump Hair Care

After your skydive, your hair will probably be a bit disheveled—and that’s totally okay! You just jumped out of an airplane, after all. To tame any tangles, bring a comb or brush with you, and use a detangler if you need to.

5. Comfort Is Key

Above all, remember that comfort is the most important thing. If a certain style feels too tight or is uncomfortable (tight braids can sometimes cause headaches), don’t be afraid to try something else. You want to be able to focus on your jump, not on adjusting your hair mid freefall.

With a little preparation, you can make sure your hair is secure, comfortable, and ready for your skydive adventure. While your hair might not be the first thing on your mind when you’re about to jump out of a plane, it’s nice to know that you’re not dealing with tangles, discomfort, or flyaways. A little bit of prep can make the experience that much more enjoyable!

We can’t wait to see you at Skydive Chicago, and no matter what your hair looks like when you land, remember—you’re going to be smiling from ear to ear after that amazing freefall experience!
