Safety is our number one concern and weather conditions are a major factor in skydiving.  Unjumpable conditions may include but are not limited to cloud cover, high winds, precipitation, or low temperatures. Skydive Chicago is located in Ottawa, Illinois, which is about 70 miles southwest of downtown Chicago. Often times, even if there is bad weather in Chicago, we may have clear blue skies for jumping here.  If you are concerned about the weather conditions we recommend checking your favorite weather source for the weather in Ottawa, Illinois 61350, or call us at 815-433-0000 with any questions.

Your $50 deposit is non-refundable in the case of weather.   We offer our tandem class rain or shine and in the event of weather you have two options: a) You may come out and sit in the 25 minute tandem class and in the case you are not able to make your jump we will issue a rain check, which is redeemable at full value for up to one year from your original reservation date. If you return to make your jump within the same calendar year you will not need to complete paperwork or take the class again, otherwise a $10 class fee will apply.  b) You may reschedule your reservation for up to one year from your original reservation date without incurring penalties. We realize that we are a long drive for most of our customers, so in the case of weather, you may call us the day of your reservation at 815-433-0000 to reschedule for a future date. We will hold your $50 deposit for up to one year.

What if I come out and take the class and decide not to jump?

If you go through the class and decide not to jump, you will be refunded less the $50 deposit. Once you have boarded the plane, the entire amount is non-refundable.

What is the reservation No Show/Cancellation policy?

The $50 deposit is not refundable. No Show Policy: If you are unable to make your reservation, please call us at 815-433-0000 by 5 pm the day prior to your reservation to reschedule. With at least one day advanced notification your deposit will be held for up to one year to reschedule your reservation. If you do not contact us prior to the day of your reservation, or do not show up, you will forfeit your $50 deposit. Cancellation Policy: If you must cancel your reservation, please call us at least 3 days prior to your original reservation date and your $50 deposit can be refunded. If you do not contact us at least 3 days prior to your reservation, your deposit will not be refundable. With at least one day advanced notification your deposit will be held for up to one year to reschedule your reservation.

Can I jump again the same day if I like it?

Yes. Skydive Chicago® has a special offer for your second tandem. If you pay for it within 1 week of your first jump, it’ll only cost you $129.00. You can use it that the same day, or save it and use it for up to one year later.

Can I bring my friends and family to watch?

Definitely YES! We have so much to do here at Skydive Chicago®, bring everyone! We have swimming, hiking or biking the trails, volleyball, a disc golf course and so much more! You can even plan on camping overnight at Skydive Chicago®, but keep in mind that for every person jumping, you are allowed a maximum of 1 non-jumping overnight guest.

How long is the first tandem jump training?

The class is about 15-20 minutes. Prior to the jump your Instructor will walk you through the training again.

I am coming out with a friend(s); can we jump at the same time?

We can generally accommodate 3-5 tandems in the airplane at one time. For safety purposes you will not be jumping out of the airplane at the same time, as we need to maintain a safe distance between jumpers in the sky. For larger groups you will always get to jump with someone from your group, but you may be asked to form smaller sub-groups of 3-5 people when you check in.

Can I jump by myself the first time?

No. At Skydive Chicago®, your first and second jump must be tandem, in which you’re harnessed to the front of an instructor. In case you forget something like pulling the parachute, it is good to have someone there.

What happens if the parachute doesn’t open?

Although it is unlikely that your main parachute will fail to open properly, it does sometimes occur and this is a common question. According to federal law, every jumper must be equipped with a main and a reserve parachute. In addition, all Skydive Chicago® equipment are equipped with an Automated Activation Device (AAD), which will automatically open the reserve parachute should the jumpers be unable to.

What kind of parachute will we use?

The parachutes used today bear little resemblance to the classic round parachutes of years past. Today, nearly all jumpers use “ram-air” parachutes. These are rectangular in shape and, when open, act like an airplane wing. They are more like gliders than umbrellas. The aerodynamics of the parachute provides it with exceptional maneuverability, allowing the jumper to land almost anywhere he/she wishes. This wing shape is also what makes the tiptoe soft landings possible.  Skydive Chicago uses all Sigma Tandem Systems and Sigma 370’s as a parachute.  These systems are top of the line and the best in the industry.

What if I love it and I want to continue skydiving?

At Skydive Chicago®, you only need to make two tandem jumps and acquire Instructor approval. Then, you can transition into our Advanced Freefall Program (AFP) for students.

What’s the landing like?

Most landings are quite soft, with most people doing a soft sliding sit-down landing. Under certain conditions and at the discretion of the Instructor, some people make a gentle stand-up landing.

How fast do you fall?

Terminal velocity of a tandem is approximately 120 miles per hour.

How long does the skydive last?

Up to 60 seconds in freefall and about 5-7 minutes under canopy.

What will the skydive feel like?

The sensation of freefall is more like flying than falling, and is intensely exciting and liberating. The canopy flight is peaceful and relaxing.

How do I keep my ears from getting plugged up after the skydive?
Sometimes after the skydive your ears may feel that they are plugged up or you might have a slight discomfort.  This is caused to the the change in pressure.  Similar to what you may experience while flying on a commercial aircraft or going up a mountain.  To help avoid this try and keep your ears equalized on they flight to altitude.  Yawning or moving your jaw around helps with this process.  On some cases skydivers will wear filtered ear plugs to help.  These are available at any drugs store or at The Drop Shop for purchase.  Most skydivers do not experience this problem and if they do it goes away 10-15 minutes after they land.  Here is a link to a video with more information.
Is skydiving safe?

Skydiving is like any other extreme sport: there are inherent risks that require careful training and execution. Failure to follow that training can lead to serious injury or death. Skydiving is as safe as the individual(s) make it. The equipment has improved considerably over the old-style round parachute and is so reliable that, when used properly, skydiving can be as safe or safer than any other extreme sport.

Photos & Video

Can we get one video for our whole group?

No, the time/distance gap between jumper exits preclude a camera person from being able to film more than one student at a time.

Can I get a video or photographs of my jump?

Yes. Skydive Chicago® operates a freefall cinematography business right here on site. We can provide you with videos that have been edited to music and include a pre-jump interview. We also provide high definition digital stills of your skydive.

Can I bring my own camera with me on the jump?

No, you are much too busy with your skydive to look after your cameras. It very easily may get lost or broken and we cannot risk dropping it in freefall or under parachute.  Even experienced jumpers require 200 jumps prior to wearing any type of camera system.

Can weather effect the outcome of my media package?

In most cases weather does not effect the outcome of your video and pictures however there are a few circumstances that it can.  Cold:  It is roughly 20-30 degrees cooler at 13,000ft  from the surface temperatures.  If the ground temperatures are below 40°F you will need to wear a winter hat and neckwarmer that may cover your face.  If getting the best shot of you skydiving is a high priority you may want to consider scheduling when temperatures are warmer.   High Overcast:  We can not jump through clouds but on occasion the overcast cloud layer is above our lowest tandem jump altitude (8,000′)  The overcast layer may cause your photo and video to be a bit darker than if it were a sunny day.  If you have any questions feel free to call or email.

Is tipping expected?

Your instructor(s) works very hard to introduce to you the world of Skydiving.  They have spent tens of thousands of dollars in training and equipment to get to the point to take people on tandem skydives.  They are compensated for their jumps,  however if you feel as though your instructor was especially good tipping is always appreciated but never expected.  The amount is totally up to you, drink chips purchased at our deli is also a great way to show your appreciation.

Are there any physical requirements?

As with any sport, the better shape you are in the easier it will be and the more fun you’ll have. However, we’ve taken people with many different disabilities. We have some of the most experienced tandem instructors at Skydive Chicago®. If you have a special requirement, call us! We can make your dream of flight come true!

If you have a special medical concern, please contact your doctor.

Is there a time requirement?

For weekend reservations allow yourself to spend the entire day. We encourage jumping on weekdays. Tandem classes last 20 minutes.  After the class, the time it takes for you to jump has a few variables such as weather, if we are busy that day, and when you signed in. Ideally a tandem jump can be completed in half a day. Please remember though, be prepared to spend the entire day.

Is there a weight requirement?

Yes. For safety purposes jumpers must weigh less than 250lbs. No exceptions can be made and weight will be verified. In very rare circumstances it may be unsafe to take a passenger even if under the weight limit if the harness doesn’t fit correctly. Our Instructors make the final determination to keep everyone safe.

Is there an age requirement?

There is no maximum age but you must be at least 18 years of age regardless of parental consent. There are no exceptions to this rule. A valid photo ID (drivers license, state ID, or passport) is required to sign up for class. If you do not have an ID you will not jump.

Can my family and friends come and watch?

Of course they can!  Skydive Chicago is a great place to spend a nice afternoon.  The spectator area has picnic tables and shade trees in full view of the landing area.  Your family and friends will be able to watch you land in comfort.
